Extreme rainfall events in Southern Europe in the winter months meant that managing water balance at the Sites was a major challenge. Consequently, the objective was not achieved.
Zinkgruvan and Aguablanca achieved this objective. Neves-Corvo maintained a high level of compliance but did occasionally exceed permit conditions related to the levels of sulphates and nitrogen (nitrate, nitrite and ammonia) in the Oeiras River. (The mine does not discharge during periods of low river flow and is adding an additional pond to be able to better manage this issue). Galmoy exceeded permitted limits for ammonia on one occasion due to extremely high rainfall that required discharge of water. (This problem has been addressed by further advances in closing the tailings facilities), Changes in the mine plan and two consecutive winters of very high rainfall have resulted in a review of the feasibility of this objective. |
