Location

Caserones is a large-scale open-pit copper–molybdenum operation producing copper concentrate, copper cathode, and molybdenum concentrate from Chile’s Atacama Region.

Located approximately 125 km southeast of Copiapó and 100 km from our Candelaria Copper Mining Complex, Caserones sits in the Andean range in the Vicuña district approximately 35 km away from the Filo del Sol and Josemaria deposits which form Vicuña Corp. The mine is operated by Lundin Mining, which holds a 70% interest following its acquisition from JX Metals Corporation in 2023.

Mining is carried out using a conventional truck-and-shovel fleet. Ore is processed through a grinding-flotation plant with a design capacity of 105,000 tonnes per day, and a SX-EW facility with a nominal capacity of 34,500 tonnes per year. Sulphide ore is processed using conventional crushing, grinding, flotation, to produce copper and molybdenum concentrate. Oxide ore is processed using a heap leach, pregnant-leach collection and solvent extraction-electrowinning methods to produce copper cathode. The concentrates are exported via the port of Totoralillo while copper cathodes are shipped to Antofagasta.

Caserones recycles about 80% of the water required in the operation and any fresh water is supplied by underground sources. 100% of Caserones’ electrical supply is from renewable sources.
