Creating Opportunities Through Literacy
In the rural communities near our Chapada operation in Brazil, access to books has historically been limited, particularly for children living outside the municipal centre. That’s why we support the community literacy program, ‘Leitura no Campo’, which helps put books directly into the hands of children across the municipality of Alto Horizonte, Nova Iguaçu de Goiás and Campinorte.
Story circles and take-home reading kits encourage reading both at school and at home, while renovated libraries in Alto Horizonte and Campinorte provide welcoming spaces for children to explore more than 1,200 books at each location. For many participants, Leitura no Campo provided their very first book. Teachers report stronger engagement in the classroom, while parents are increasingly reading alongside their children at home.
By encouraging a lifelong interest in reading, Leitura no Campo helps build skills and confidence that can open doors for years to come.
