Preserving Palaeontological Heritage at Chapada

Fossil deposits in Brazil are considered a part of national heritage, and their recovery is strictly regulated. At our Chapada operation, we follow federal legislation and established international industry practices to ensure palaeontological heritage is protected.

Before any mining expansion, we implement a structured program to identify, recover, and preserve fossil specimens in areas influenced by our activities. These efforts are carried out by our specialized team using recognized scientific methodologies, under the oversight of regulatory authorities.

Recovered specimens are carefully catalogued, conserved, and made available for academic research and educational initiatives, contributing to the understanding of evolution and the region’s ecological history.

Beyond this technical work, we engage schools, universities, and local communities to raise awareness about the importance of fossil heritage. Through these actions, Chapada demonstrates Lundin Mining’s commitment to sustainable development that respects both nature and history.
